The Ministry of Health Uganda, in partnership with Reach Out Mbuya Community Health Initiative (ROM), successfully hosted the inaugural Integrated Health Camp from August 21–22, 2025, under the theme “I know my health status. What about you?” The event marked a significant milestone in advancing accessible, comprehensive, and inclusive healthcare services for all.
The two-day camp brought together medical teams, community members, and partners for a shared mission — to promote early health-seeking behaviour and expand access to essential services, including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for individuals battling opioid dependence.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based approach that combines approved medications with counselling and psychosocial support to help individuals manage opioid use disorder effectively. The treatment not only reduces withdrawal symptoms and cravings but also helps prevent relapse, lowers the risk of overdose, and reduces transmission of blood-borne infections such as HIV and hepatitis.
During the camp, participants received free medical consultations, HIV testing and counselling, reproductive health services, and access to MAT for those eligible and ready to begin treatment. Eligibility is based on an individual’s readiness to stop opioid use, and services are currently available at Butabika National Referral Hospital and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.
Speaking during the camp, Dr. Komuhangi Liz, from ROM’s MAT team, explained that the program provides a holistic pathway to recovery by addressing both the medical and psychological aspects of addiction.
“MAT uses medications such as Methadone and Buprenorphine alongside counselling to help people regain control of their lives, reduce cravings, and stabilize their health,” she noted.
The camp was well-received by community members, many of whom appreciated the opportunity to access quality care without stigma or barriers. Health workers also emphasized the importance of community awareness and continuous support to ensure sustained recovery and reintegration of clients into society.
Through integrating addiction treatment with broader health services, ROM and the Ministry of Health continue to demonstrate that compassionate, evidence-based care can transform lives; ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or condition, has the right to health and hope.
