The five-day intensive training aimed at strengthening the capacity of healthcare providers to manage the HIVDR cases and maneuver the HIVDR dashboard.

MoH through the HIV/TB 2022 guidelines introduced HIVDR monitoring for eligible categories and guided the switch of patient treatment regimens to be guided only by the utilization of the HIVDR services, however, the capacity building of health workers in this area did not happen during the roll out of the HIV guidelines in 2021.

Capacity building has been going on within the region using the online platform during the regional 3rd line meetings, however, this has been inadequate hence the need for the in-class training.

The training brought together 68 participants equipped health workers with in-depth knowledge on detecting, preventing, and managing drug-resistant HIV strains. The participants engaged in hands-on exercises, case studies, and discussions on innovative approaches for treatment adherence, an area critical to reducing the spread of resistant HIV strains.

Participants expressed gratitude for the timely training. “This training has given me new confidence in addressing complex cases,” said, Remela Douglas Daniel, a Clinical officer at St. Kizito Bwaise Health Center III.

Empowered to make a difference, Remela reflects on the impact of the advanced HIV drug resistance training and its importance for patient care.”

“I will do intensive adherence counselling especially with patients whose viral load is getting higher such that they adhere to medication to avoid HIVDR,” Remela added.

The training concluded with a strong sense of commitment among participants to apply their new knowledge in their health centers.
