Director of Public Prosecutions Staff Embrace ROM Health Services for Awareness and Testing

ROM’s care and treatment teams joined the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions at the Nakawa Resident State Attorney’s Offices for a Health Awareness Camp focused on bringing services closer to people.

The camp offered sensitisation and screening for HIV/AIDS, TB, cervical cancer, and other related illnesses. It was encouraging to see people access both information and testing in one place.

During the activity, Claire Murungi, our Biomedical Prevention Technical Officer, noted that despite all the efforts in HIV prevention, Uganda still records more than 50,000 new infections every year.

She also pointed out that some of the most affected groups live in informal settings, including female sex workers and people who inject drugs, where the risk of transmission is still high. There are also clear differences by age and gender, with more women affected than men.

Although access to ART has improved and many people are responding well to treatment, challenges remain. The rate of new infections among adolescents and young women is still concerning and calls for more targeted interventions.

Activities like this remind us that taking services closer to communities is key. We must continue to strengthen prevention efforts, expand access to testing, and ensure no one is left behind.
