Creating Opportunities for Out-of-School Adolescents through Skilling

Out-of-school adolescents often face the greatest barriers to accessing adolescent-friendly health services and information. Limited access to these rights exposes them to serious social and health consequences. Funded by Global Affairs Canada through CARE International Uganda, the SHE SOARS Project seeks to increase equitable use of health services by diverse groups of women, adolescent girls and boys and children’s rights holders, particularly out-of-school adolescents. Under the project, ROM is also in charge of creating an enabling environment for the youth and young people, where the skilling initiatives and Youth Savings and Loans Associations (YSLAs) fall.

The group vocational skilling activities held during the quarter had 78 participants. Through hands-on sessions, they gained practical skills in preparing confectionaries as potential income-generating activities, hence inspiring their entrepreneurial ability and unleashing individual potential. In addition, participants completed training in soap-making, acquired essential skills in producing, cutting, and packaging of both liquid and bar soap, equipping them with knowledge they can directly apply in small-scale businesses.

These skilling initiatives continue to strengthen livelihood capacities among young people while advancing inclusive economic empowerment, ensuring that no one is left behind.
