#SuccessStory: From the streets to the classroom: A new beginning for Kevin

At just 12 years old, Kevin’s life had already been marked by challenges that no child should have to endure. Living with HIV and struggling to achieve viral suppression, Kevin shared a small one-roomed house with his father, whose alcohol dependency often left the family vulnerable. Life at home was unstable, and there were times when Kevin experienced physical abuse. With no consistent source of support, he dropped out of school and spent his days collecting plastic bottles and scrap materials to earn money for survival. In December 2025, a multidisciplinary team from ROM visited Kevin and his family during the Christmas season. Beyond delivering a Christmas care package filled with food and essential household items, the team listened to his story, assessed the family’s needs, and provided psychosocial support and counseling. The visit brought much-needed comfort and reminded Kevin that he was not alone. The home visit revealed both the difficult realities Kevin faced and the remarkable resilience he carried despite his circumstances.

The ROM Community and Social Support department steps in

Recognizing the urgent need to restore Kevin’s future, the ROM Socio-Economic Empowerment (ROMSE) team rallied together to support him. After reviewing his case, the team agreed to sponsor his education through the SIDECOLE program, removing one of the biggest barriers standing between him and his dreams. Today, Kevin is back in school and enrolled in primary two. The transformation has been remarkable. Instead of spending his days searching for bottles to sell, Kevin now spends his time learning, making friends, and rebuilding his confidence in the classroom. He is receiving ongoing support from the ROM team to strengthen treatment adherence, improve his health outcomes, and ensure that he remains engaged in care.

Restoring hope!

Kevin’s story is a powerful reminder that timely intervention, compassion, and community support can change the course of a child’s life. While challenges remain, he now has an opportunity that once seemed out of reach

Through the commitment of the ROMSE team, the SIDECOLE program, and the continued dedication of ROM staff, Kevin is no longer defined by his circumstances. He is a child with renewed hope, a place in school, and a brighter future ahead. Every child deserves a chance.  For Kevin, that chance has become a reality.
